In Year 10, pupils follow a 12-week program of study that provides and prepares pupils for IT skills used within typical working environments.

The units covered are as follows:

  • • IT user fundamentals: Pupils learn to use IT to meet their individual needs, to organise, store and retrieve information, to follow safety and security practices, and carry out routine maintenance of IT systems and respond to system problems.
  • • IT troubleshooting for users: Pupils learn about, and how to solve, common hardware and software errors, and how to get help with more complex problems.
  • • IT communication fundamentals: being able to use a variety of IT sources to access, search for, select and use online information, assess its fitness for purpose, and use electronic methods to communicate and exchange information.
  • • Using email: Pupils learn to understand and use email, including knowing how to structure an email, identify general conventions, how to safeguard against malicious software, and learning to create, format, send, reply, and forward emails.
  • • Using word processing software: Pupils learn to enter, edit, and combine text and other information accurately within word processing documents, and to structure and format documents correctly and professionally.
  • • Using spreadsheet software: Pupils learn to use spreadsheet software to enter, edit, and organise numerical data, use appropriate formulas and tools to summarise and display spreadsheet information, and present this information effectively.
  • • Producing charts using IT: Pupils learn to produce charts appropriate to the data set, how to format charts, and present them in a meaningful way.
  • • Using presentation software: Pupils learn to combine text and other media within presentation slides, use tools to structure, edit and format slides, and prepare slides for a presentation.

This curriculum is designed to be practical, relevant, and aligned with the expectations of modern workplaces. Pupils gain confidence using standard office software, develop independence in solving everyday IT issues, and learn to communicate effectively in digital formats. The programme ensures all pupils leave with a strong foundation in digital literacy, enabling them to succeed in further education, employment, or training. By equipping pupils with essential, real-world IT skills, we help prepare them to navigate an increasingly digital world with competence and confidence.
