What is diagnostic questioning?
In our school, children join us with a wide range of experiences, knowledge, and skills from their previous schools. To make sure every child gets the support they need from the very start, we use something called diagnostic questions.
These are short, low-pressure questions that help us understand what your child already knows and what they might need help with. They are not tests: there are no grades or pressure. Instead, they help to give teachers a clear picture of each pupil’s starting point.
Why is this important?
This is important because it allows us to adapt our teaching. If a child has gaps in their knowledge, we can address these early. If they are ready to be stretched further, we can provide additional challenge. This means every child is learning at the right level for them.
What is spaced retrieval?
We also regularly revisit key ideas through low-stakes tasks and questioning. This use of spaced retrieval, means pupils return to important knowledge over their time with us rather than learning it just once. Not only does this help knowledge stick in the long term, but it also teaches pupils effective revision strategies they can use independently as they progress through school.
Level 7 Access Arrangements Assessor
We want every child to have a fair chance to show what they can do in lessons and exams. To help with this, we have a qualified Level 7 Access Arrangements Assessor.
Their role is to:
- • Carry out specialist assessments to understand if a pupil has particular learning needs, such as difficulties with reading, writing, or processing information.
- • Provide clear reports that may support access arrangements (for example, extra time or use of a reader), making sure these reflect the pupil’s usual way
- of working in class.
- • Work closely with teachers, our SENCo, and families so that any recommendations are understood and put into practice.
- • Ensure that all assessments are carried out carefully, fairly, and in line with national guidance.
Further testing
For pupils who arrive at The Rosewood School without prior attainment data, we will use CAT4 testing to establish a starting point. For those with identified or suspected reading difficulties, we will use the EXACT assessment to determine reading age and highlight specific areas of support.
Our aim is simple: to make sure no child is left behind, every child is supported and challenged, and all pupils develop the confidence and ambition to reach their full potential.
