Within Key Stage 3 at the Rosewood School, we strive to engage all pupils in mathematical learning, in practical and creative ways, through a broad curriculum, in order to plug any gaps that they might have.

We work with each individual to develop their understanding of all aspects of mathematics including: number, geometry, algebra and statistics.

Our curriculum develops critical thinking and problem solving skills and the ability to apply mathematical concepts to real-life situations.

We ensure that all pupils have opportunities to develop their skills independently but also encourage collaborative work, where appropriate.

How will pupils be assessed?

Pupils will be assessed through a combination of formative and summative methods, designed to reflect their knowledge and understanding in a meaningful way.

These will include:

  • Participation in lessons. Teachers will check and support individuals with any gaps in knowledge
  • Weekly skills checks personalised for individuals, focussing on different mathematical skills and concepts.
  • Termly assessments
  • Quizzes and knowledge checks (including the use of diagnostic testing)
  • Self and peer assessment
  • Feedback on independent or group tasks: “Pink for think”

Maths frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What does a maths lesson at the Rosewood School look like?

Lessons begin with a Power of 3 (PO3).  A chance to revisit topics taught recently to keep practising those skills. During the lesson, pupils will work individually or in small groups to complete tasks. Everyone is encouraged to share their ideas and model answers on the interactive whiteboard but this won’t happen straight away. There will be plenty of opportunities during the lesson for teachers to find out what you know already and what you struggle with, through open-ended questions or quick-fire quizzes.

I don’t like maths and have struggled to understand topics in the past. Does this matter?

Absolutely not. Many pupils who join us at TRS have struggled with maths in the past. Each term we focus on a different topic like number or algebra so that we can go back and find out which bits you may have forgotten or haven’t understood before. We unpick vocabulary and use visual images to help support ideas. Having smaller classes really helps too as work can be adapted for each individual.

I don't like maths but I do like maths lessons at TRS!

How will teachers help me to improve my maths skills as I think I am really behind?

Our curriculum has been chosen carefully so that we focus on one main topic each term. This means that we can work through all learning objectives from GCSE grade 1! We use quick fire quizzes to see what you already know, then adapt each lesson to ensure everyone makes progress. We spend time modelling examples and asking pupils to explain their ideas too. All your work is marked. Correct answers or well- thought our processes are highlighted in green. Anything that needs to be looked at again is highlighted in pink. Regular opportunities are provided for you to look at “Pink for think” tasks again in later lessons. Support is always provided if needed.

Do I have to complete homework?

Yes you do in Year 11! Work is set weekly on the Seneca platform. However homework clubs have been set up at lunchtimes for you to complete any work if you feel this would help you. You will also be provided with revision guides and workbooks so that you can complete additional revision.

Although homework is not compulsory in Years 7-10. Additional tasks are always set on My Maths for you to complete if you wish.

What equipment do I need to bring to my lesson?

You don't need to bring any equipment to your lessons, we provide everything! This will include calculators, protractors and other useful manipulatives like negative number lines and algebra tiles.

Do you use any online maths platforms?

Yes we do. You will have access to:

Senecalearning.com

mymaths.co.uk

Mathgenie.co.uk is really useful for revision purposes in Year 11.

If you could benefit from extra practice with your times tables in KS3, you will be provided with a login to ttrockstars.com
