Staplehurst school

At KS3 and KS4, the young people study a broad and balanced curriculum bespoke to their individual need. Their timetable will include English, Maths and Science and lessons are also allocated to enable to the young people to continue their option choices. This is with the aim of ensuring the young people have the opportunity to enjoy a full curriculum and also gain the GCSE’s that they enjoy and are entered for.

Staff at Staplehurst teach to a variety of exam boards dependent on what the young person has been entered for by their mainstream school. Students are able to sit exams at Staplehurst or, with support from the experienced integration team, at their mainstream school.

Staplehurst also offer PSHE, Horticulture, Food technology and Design Technology skills as well as many other opportunities to enhance their cultural capital whilst being in hospital.

At KS5 young people have the opportunity to follow an individualised timetable dependent on their educational need. At Staplehurst they can continue their A levels, BTEC qualifications, Extended Project Qualifications and short courses. Young people are also able to study English and Maths GCSEs at Post 16 if required. Functional Skills are also offered.

Staplehurst work closely with mainstream schools to ensure the most appropriate educational package is provided.

NEET young people also attend sessions at Staplehurst and, with valuable support from the Participation and Progression Officers, our students are able to complete applications for apprenticeships, colleges and work placements. Students applying for Universities are also supported with their personal statements and UCAS applications. Staplehurst also support young people at interviews.

Young people are also offered AQA Unit Awards enabling them to engage in a project of interest.

KS5 students are also offered a range of cultural capital opportunities including college induction events, career days, photography exhibitions and opportunities for work placements.

Reintegration

As part of our educational package, our extremely experienced integration team support young people back to their mainstream school during their admission at the Kent and Medway Hospital. This includes supporting the young person with their concerns, organising meetings with schools and assisting young people in class as needed. Reintegration staff liaise closely with the health team within the hospital to develop bespoke integration plans. This include lunchtime support, ensuring quiet spaces and ensure schools have supportive strategies in place for discharge.
